We will be closed on Monday, May 24th but will reopen for programming on Wednesday, May 26th for Womyn’s Gym.

Sun Run Success!!
The Sun Run was a huge success!! Please enjoy our photos and blog on the Womyns Gym website . Huge thanks to Lynn Kanuka of www.sportmedbc.com. To quote Womyns Gym Program Coordinator, Tyla Flexman: “Lynn, know that your coaching, sponsorship and motivation helped make our goal a reality. It was a gorgeous day for a sun run, and we had all but one participant join us for the race. One of our clients ran the sun run coming in at 1:25 and the others walking in around 2 hrs. Everyone was so excited, happy and proud of themselves. Thank you for allowing us to share that experience with our clients, they truly appreciate it.”
What’s next for Womyn’s Gym? Plans are in the works for a walking program to start in the fall so more of our participants will be ready for the Sun Run Training in January for Sun Run April 2011!

Thank You!!

Huge thanks to www.everywomanintheworld.com last weekend, they raised $1500 for Beauty Night Society through their silent auction during the welcome reception. Since 2004, Every Woman in the World has been a proud sponsor of Beauty Night Society and we thank them for their support directly with the participants and for investing in Beauty Night Society’s mission – providing marginalized women and youth tools to make positive lifestyle changes.
Nancy Perreault entered a contest that donates money to one’s favourite charity. She chose Beauty Night. Thank you Nancy for the contribution of $410.

Nancy Perreault has agreed to design our Xmas Stocking for our annual Xmas Stocking Drive. Every Xmas, volunteers from high schools, Sparks troupes, elementary schools sew Xmas Stockings that are filled with skin care, dental care, hair care, and body care products. 600 Xmas stockings are handed out on Xmas Eve to women in the Downtown Eastside, transition homes, drop in centres and hospitals.
Xmas Stocking Coordinator, Blair Lockhart informed me that fabric contributions have already started arriving. In August 2010, we will be holding a volunteer information session specificaly for the stocking drive and Knit Fit. If you are interested in volunteering for either project, please contact us at info@beautynight.org.
Thank you for everything!

Beauty Night… because dignity is beautiful

Feed Back: Our Volunteers, Our Participants

A few weeks ago, we started asking the women what they liked about Beauty Night Society. We also asked what they would like to change. One of the key things they like is the relationships they develop with you. The way you treat each woman with kindness and dignity makes each woman feel special. In terms of what they would like changed, they told us:

1) More Hairdressers
2) Draws
3) Healthy Snacks
4) Notification as to what services we will be offering each week

Some of these changes, we have started to add to our events. On Monday afternoons, DJ distributes flyers to remind the women what we will be offering that evening. Since last Monday when she started to promote the events with flyers, our numbers have increased. There seems to be an air of excitement when the women attend the events. The excitement is contagious and makes for exciting and interactive programming for both our participants and our volunteers.

Thank you for making last night so magical and fun for everyone! Huge thanks to Kerry, Anna, & Amanda who helped “decorate” the space. * Thanks to everyone (especially Tyla Flexman who sent a full page worth) of inspirational sayings. I think we took recycling to the next level by taking envelopes & papers and turning them into lucky four leaf clovers. Before the participants arrived, each station was decorated with shamrocks covered with words of wisdom. As each woman entered the room, they got to pick a lucky four leaf clover for her to take home with her.

With her magical Top Hat, Gwen greeted the women at the door. She collected their names so they could win prizes throughout the evening. There was an air of festivities. With excitement, the women cheered each other on as they would come up to claim their prizes after their names were called. The gift bags that Anna created were based on some of the donations that we collected during our Xmas Stocking Drive. With delight, the women opened up makeup bags full of beauty products, jewelry, and The Da Vinci Inquest Board Game. Photographer Ken Villeneuve captured their expressions of delight on film. Beauty Night moments captured through Ken’s photography were distributed to the women. Women giggled and showed their pictures to their friends and volunteers. Many a pose prompted the women to ask Ken to take a picture similar to one that a friend had from weeks previous.

Wendy Shuen does it again with her culinary mastery. Many of the women have been asking for healthy snacks. Wendy proves that snacks can be delicious and be good for us. The women LOVED the grape kabobs! Between the delectable blueberry cake (which I admit to sampling) and the fresh fruit, they were thrilled!! When someone created the saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” it is obvious then never saw trays decorated in shamrock tissue paper covered with lush green grapes on skers and bite sized blueberry cakes.

I know all the women loved getting the sparkly nail art – huge thanks to Denise and Jen. Huge thanks to Gwen for picking up the silver and green glitter. The “glitter ball” manicure will be perfected next week as I promise to pick up a couple of paint brushes (thank you Jen for the recommondation) to make the application of top coat simpler. * At the very end of the night, Amanda & I found the bag that contained a few more pairs of tweezers which will make the application of the sparkles easier.

The shimmery mica flecked “pot of gold” body lotion (www.iluselu.ca thank you Meaghan!) went over well. Gwen & I walked around the room and asked them to make a wish before we poured some of the golden lotion into their hands. Like a potion, the rubbed their hands together feverently focused on making their wishes come true.

For some women, getting their brows shaped by Amanda was a service wished we had always offered. Amanda’s brow shaping was worth waiting for. The women enjoyed having the option of gettting their brows done AND makeup too.

The line up at Kerry’s massage station spoke volumes. He promised several of the participants he would be back next week. Kerry also saved the day for our Womyns Gym participants who are in need of workout clothing. (sizes 10, 12, 14 and one size 6). Thanks to his friends and familly in Cranbrook who did a clothing drive for Beauty Night and then drove it down to Vancouver. (Kerry has been slowly disbursing the clothes during the last 3 or four months . Unfortunately we can not store the clothing at our space due to potential bed bug infestation). We were able to find a selection of tee shirts and tank tops for working out. We are still collecting workout pants and hoodies. Huge thanks to Anna and Kerry for selecting some of the garments for the women to choose from.

When I walked past Anna’s Four Leave Clover Creation Station, I was thrilled to see some of the women pick up some of the inspirational sayings that were strewn around the room and using them in their four leaf clover collages. Thank you to Anna for creating the station and thanks to Franny and Vivian for giving Shianne – the little girl who usually rides her bike around a hand.

Thanks for the group effort by Gwen, Franny, DJ, and Vivian to calm the teething baby. I give kudos to Gwen who spent over 45 minutes bouncing the baby to sleep. As Gwen pointed out afterwards, we really do need 3 people minimum on childcare – 2 for the baby to take turns and one for the other children. Based on last night, I give tremendous praise for everyone who made child care work last Monday when there were 5 children. And Tyla & Felicity and the Womyn’s Gym team for providing such fantastic workout opportunities for the women participating in the womyns gym program

Beauty Night Turns 9!

“I think everyone wants to make a difference in someone’s life,” explains Beauty Night national executive director, Caroline MacGillivray, in her typical upbeat manner. Nine years ago, while volunteering at the WISH Drop In centre, Caroline dreamt up a unique way to make a difference in the lives of marginalized women in Vancouver’s eastside: Stage an event offering free makeovers for the holiday season.

A lofty plan with one major drawback. “I thought it would cost tons of money,” says MacGillivray. Never underestimate the power of the human spirit. Caroline put the word out to everyone on her email list. Volunteers began signing up—including students from Blanche Macdonald and the London School of Hairdressing and Aesthetics. Caroline’s home made posters advertised the event and within weeks, the first Beauty Night became a reality.

“The women were really excited,” says MacGillivray. What made Beauty Night an instant hit went far beyond haircuts, cosmetics and massages. The eastside women were given something they had rarely experienced—respect and dignity. “What we do is health care, fostering self-esteem,” explains MacGillivray. “When you believe in yourself, you’re more able to change.”

The women began asking for more Beauty Nights—and Caroline and the volunteers happily obliged. Beauty Night became a monthly event. MacGillivray created an eight week personal development program, including nutrition and fitness. Beauty Night started winning volunteer awards and now has weekly makeovers, fitness and yoga programs, and other events at the PHS Life Skills Centre. Since inception, the non-profit, volunteer run program has provided more than 11,000 makeovers to marginalized women in Vancouver, Victoria, and Toronto. Beauty Night is also creating more opportunities for the women to empower themselves. 20% of the Monday makeover clients have become Beauty Night volunteers.

On December 14th, Beauty Night turns 9, celebrating another noteworthy year. MacGillivray won the gold community spirit award at the Celebrating Women and the Spirit of the Cranes banquet. Katie Benjamin, a long-time Beauty Night volunteer, won a YWCA Young Woman of Distinction award for creating Womyns Gym, which are Beauty Night fitness programs sponsored through Telus.

December 14th is also the 7th anniversary of Beauty Night’s Stocking Drive. Spearheaded by Stocking Coordinator, Blair Lockhart, Product Coordinator, Revel Kunz, and Stockings Designer, Nancy Black, literally thousands of volunteers of all ages are involved. High School students from York House, Churchill Secondary, Prince of Wales, Van Tech and many more, local designers, and Kwantlen college fashion department students sew the stockings. Sparks, Brownies & Girl Guides decorate the stockings.

Thera Wise, BC Hydro, Carrie Wheeler Talent Management, and Blanche McDonald have been collecting donations of skin care, makeup, nail, dental, body, and hair care products to fill the stockings. Donations also include gloves and toques.

The December 14th festivities will also include Knit Fit, providing hand made scarves for Beauty Night clients. Founded six years ago by Laura Mah at the tender age of 11, Knit Fit volunteers include students from Chief Maquinna Elementary School, Templeton High School, Vancouver Technical Secondary School and Britannia Secondary School.

The stockings will be handed out to Beauty Night clients by some special holiday guests, Mrs. Claus and her elves. Laura and her KnitFit cohorts will also be making spirits bright by presenting scarves to the guests. Stockings will also be handed out at other events leading up to Christmas Eve.

Looking ahead, the New Year will ring in a brand new Beauty Night initiative. Inner Beauty Boot Camp will introduce self-care to Beauty Night clients and give them the the tools they need to continue their education, or find new employment opportunities. “It is amazing how far we have come,” says MacGillivray.

Beauty Night’s 7th annual stocking drive will be accepting donations, new hair, skincare, dental care, gloves and socks up until December 14th. For more information about donating product, snacks, money, or become a Beauty Night volunteer, please visit beautynight.org or contact Caroline MacGillivray at 778-885-4526.
