12 Days of Xmas

The count down to the holiday season is upon us. Right in the midst of it is our 12 Days of Xmas preparation. During the 12 Days of Xmas, we dress up as Ms Claus & her elves to hand out 1500 Xmas Stockings. Fashion designer, Nancy Perreault designs the stockings. Community members and high school textile classes sew them. Elementary school students decorate them. Community members and corporations collect self care items to fill the stockings. We head out to different organizations we provide programming for during the year and hand out the stockings to the participants. This year we would like to hand out stockings in New West and Surrey too. In 2012, we will be offering additional programming in the Fraser Valley area and would like to get to know some of the participants and organizations we will be working with.

We are collecting new products such as:

socks
Mittens
gloves
dental care: tooth brushes, dental floss, tooth paste
skin care products: cleanser, moisturizer, exfolient, face mask, toner
Body care products: body wash, soap, moisturizer, body scrubs, face cloths
Hair Care products: shampoo, conditioner, styling products
Journals
Pens
Jewelry
nail files
candy canes
mandarin oranges
chocolate

* All product donations must be new to meet the requirements of Health & Safety Canada.

** We are also collecting money to purchase some of the items we might not get enough of. We also welcome donations to continue offering the programming we are able to offer to the participants we love to serve. The money will also provide additional opportunities for the women to develop life skills and other programming opportunities.

Donations can be dropped off at various locations through out the city. Donations can be dropped off at:

Carrie Wheeler Talent Management 1737 East 6th Avenue on the porch
Tritech Fabric
Suite 106 611 Alexander
Monday through Friday until 5pm
*** Please call Craig 604-255-4242 ext 210 to make arrangements for drop offs.
We are thrilled with Tritech’s support. They also donated some of the fabric to create the Xmas stockings.
Huge thanks to Judith Latoski letting Barbara at Tritech Fabric know what we need. Barbara has been incredibly supportive too.

**** Donations must be dropped off before December 1st, 2011.

After that they will be moved to another location so we can coordinate stuffing the stockings. Lush Cosmetics has offered to let us use their space for stuffing stockings.

Vancouver Timeraiser 2011

Want to volunteer in Vancouver? We are thrilled to be one of several organizations selected to participate in Vancouver Timeraiser 2011.  Taken directly from their website, an overview of the event:

Getting involved in your community isn’t always easy, so we’ve made it simple for you to find relevant and meaningful opportunities that fit your busy lifestyle.

The Timeraiser is part volunteer fair, part silent art auction and part night on the town. Throughout the evening, meet with different agencies and match your skills to their needs. Once you have made your matches, you are eligible to bid on artwork. The big twist is rather than bid money, you bid volunteer hours.

If you have the winning bid, you have 12 months to complete your pledge before bringing the artwork home as a reminder of your good will.

Beauty Night Partners with Lace Campaign

On September 12th, we started our Beauty Night with a splash of health by partnering with the Lace Campaign. Lace encourages women to get their pap tests once a year. According to studies, many cases of cervical cancer can be cured if caught early on. We partner with street nurses to offer pap testing for Beauty Night participants 3 times a year. Please encourage the women in your life to book a pap test once a year.

In the midst of sadness, I love how the DTES community comes together in love and support. Hoping for speedy recovery for our program coordinator Tiffany Telford who is in Kelowna General Hospital. Our volunteers and participants have created cards and letters to show their love for Tiffany.

Volunteer Orientation on Tuesday! 5:30pm.

Do I need to do makeup?

We have many volunteer opportunities.

We have three streams of programming:

Makeovers (hair, makeup, manicures, relaxation massage)

Wellness (footcare, walk/run clinic/womyn gym)

Life Skills (literacy, goal setting, mentorship opportunities)

When these are combined together, they create opportunities for our participants to build self esteem and change their lives. Thanks to over 400 volunteers we have given over 11 000 life-makeovers in the past 10 years! If you are interested in getting volunteering for frontline work, we are holding our first volunteer orientation of 2011 on Wednesday, January 5th from 5:30pm to 8:30pm.
